DE Seit langer Zeit fotografiere ich in meinem direkten Umfeld und auch auf Reisen fragmentierte Gebäude. So ist über die Jahre ein Archiv der zeitgenössischen Ruinen entstanden, das ich als Grundlage für Collagen verwende. Die Gründe für die Fragmentierung sind unterschiedlich: Verfall durch Zeit, Abriss, Aufbau und noch immer – und immer wieder Krieg.
Die Kriegsruine zeugt von absoluter Unmenschlichkeit. Verfall und Abriss zeigen wirtschaftliche Not und Veränderung und den Profit einer kleinen privilegierten Gruppe. Am Aufbau interessiert mich der Umstand, dass sich im Bau befindliche Gebäude ruinös erscheinen. Das ist bereits das Thema meiner Baustellen-Collagen-Serie „Heritage“, die sich mit dem Einfamilienhaus-Bauboom in der Zeit des Wirtschaftswunders nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg befasst. Hier interessiert mich die Baustelle mehr, als die heile Einfamilienhauswelt, da sie optisch mehr dem wirklichen Spirit dieser Zeit, der vom Krieg kaputten Menschen entspricht („Something new is being built and yet, it looks like a desaster.“ 1) Auch heutige Baustellen zeugen oft von Kaputtheit und Brutalität, wenn man sich die Arbeitsbedingungen und Situationen der Arbeitskräfte vor Augen führt.
Die Collagenserie Contemporary Ruins ist eine Sammlung und Bearbeitung von Abbildern zeitgenössischer fragmentierter Gebäude. Solche Gebäude spielen in der kunstgeschichtlichen Epoche der Romantik eine große Rolle. Inwieweit hier Parallelen zu ziehen sind bleibt zunächst offen und zu untersuchen.

EN For a long time now, I have been photographing fragmented buildings both in my immediate surroundings and whilst travelling. Over the years, this has resulted in an archive of contemporary ruins, which I use as the basis for my collages. The reasons for this fragmentation vary: decay over time, demolition, construction, and still – time and again – war.
War ruins bear witness to utter inhumanity. Decay and demolition reveal economic hardship and change, as well as the profit reaped by a small privileged group. What interests me about construction is the fact that buildings under construction appear ruinous. This is already the theme of my construction site collage series ‘Heritage’, which deals with the boom in detached house building during the economic miracle following the Second World War. Here, I am more interested in the construction site than in the idyllic world of the detached house, as it visually better reflects the true spirit of that era, which corresponds to people broken by war (“Something new is being built and yet, it looks like a disaster.” 1) Even today’s construction sites often bear witness to brokenness and brutality when one considers the working conditions and situations of the labourers.
The collage series Contemporary Ruins is a collection and reworking of images of contemporary fragmented buildings. Such buildings play a major role in the Romantic period of art history. The extent to which parallels can be drawn here remains, for the time being, open to question and requires further investigation.
